Far East practice covers strong national codes — GB in China, JIS and the Building Standard Law in Japan, KS in South Korea — alongside jurisdictions such as Singapore and Hong Kong that use Eurocode based or British based codes with local national annexes and approval regimes.

Countries

Country standards

China

Chinese structural steel design follows GB 50017 with materials to GB/T 700 and GB/T 1591, and execution and acceptance to GB 50205. Welding follows GB 50661 and the JGJ series, and mandatory national standards are enforced through the design review and construction acceptance process.

Japan

Japan sets structural requirements through the Building Standard Law and its enforcement orders, supported by JIS material standards such as JIS G 3101 and JIS G 3136 for seismic grade steel. Fabricators are graded under a national certification scheme, and welding qualification follows JIS Z 3801 and related standards.

South Korea

South Korea works to the Korean Building Code and KDS design standards with KS material specifications such as KS D 3503 and KS D 3515. Welding and inspection follow the KS B series, and product certification is demonstrated through the KS mark.

Singapore

Singapore has adopted the Eurocodes as SS EN standards with a Singapore National Annex, so structural steel is designed to SS EN 1993 and executed to SS EN 1090-2. Building plan approval runs through BCA, and steelwork commonly requires an accredited fabricator and independent inspection.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong uses the Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel issued by the Buildings Department, which is British and limit state based with local amendments. Steel materials must come from recognised classes of supply, and fabricators and welders work under a defined qualification and inspection regime.
