Circular Hollow Section

Circular hollow sections are structural tube. With material distributed evenly around the perimeter there is no weak axis, so a CHS is efficient in compression from any direction and outstanding in torsion — which is why architects specify it wherever the steel is left on show.

Sizes are quoted as outside diameter × wall thickness, for example 168.3 × 8.0. Two grades of manufacture exist: hot-finished to BS EN 10210 and cold-formed to BS EN 10219, and the difference matters for tight bends and for toughness at low temperature.

  • Hot-finished tube to BS EN 10210 is formed at high temperature, leaving low residual stress, sharper corner properties in the rectangular equivalents and better low-temperature toughness. Cold-formed tube to BS EN 10219 is made at ambient temperature and is generally more economical. If your specification names one standard, it should be supplied to that standard.
