What is a flitch beam?

A flitch beam is a steel plate bolted between two timber members so that the three act together. It gives far more capacity than timber alone while keeping the member the same width as the surrounding joists, which is why it suits floor upgrades and loft conversions where a steel beam would show.

Can flat bars be supplied drilled to a bolt schedule?

Yes. Send the plate schedule with hole diameters and centres and we will cut and drill each plate before delivery. Drilled holes are preferred over punched holes for structural connections because the material around the hole is not cold-worked.

What grades of flat bars / flitch do you stock?

Standard supply is S275 and S355 to BS EN 10025, fully mill-certified with heat numbers traceable to the rolling mill. Other grades — including weathering and stainless — are available to order on request.

Can I order flat bars / flitch cut to length, drilled and notched?

Yes. Every Flat section is cut to your specified length and we can drill, notch, end-plate, weld and shot-blast / paint to your engineer's detail before delivery — all in-house under BS EN 1090 EXC 3.

How quickly can flat bars / flitch be delivered?

Stock Flat sections typically dispatch within 3–5 working days of order acceptance. Fabricated packages run to a confirmed production schedule agreed at order, with weekly progress reporting and HIAB offload worldwide.

Flat Bars / Flitch

Flat bars and flitch plates cover the fabrication jobs no rolled profile fits: packing out a bearing, splicing two beams, stiffening an existing web, or sandwiching between timber joists to make a flitch beam that disappears inside a normal floor depth.

Sizes are quoted as width × thickness, for example 200 × 10. For flitch work, plate depth is normally set slightly less than the timber depth so the steel stays concealed — check your engineer's detail before ordering.
