Universal Column

Universal columns are rolled with a depth and width close to equal, which is the whole point of the profile: a vertical member has to resist buckling in every direction, not only in the plane of the frame. That symmetry is what separates a UC from a UB of similar weight.

Sizes run from light 152×152 posts used in domestic goalpost frames up to heavy 356×406 sections carrying multi-storey loads. Each size below has its own page with dimensions, area of section and weight per metre for baseplate and connection design.

StructuralSteel.ai holds 19 UC sizes, cut to length, drilled and CE marked under BS EN 1090 EXC 3, with EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates on every order. Typically specified for storey-height posts, baseplate-mounted columns, goalpost frame legs, heavy bracing nodes and mezzanine and platform legs.

Before you order

  • Effective length of the column and its restraint conditions top and bottom
  • Baseplate size, thickness and holding-down bolt layout
  • Whether the column is drilled for incoming beam connections
  • Level tolerance at the base — grout packs are usually needed

FAQs

Universal Column (UC),
answered.

Buying universal column (UC) — sizes, grades, cutting, fabrication and worldwide delivery from StructuralSteel.ai.

  • Yes, and it often is. Laid flat as a shallow beam, a UC gives useful capacity in a limited depth, which suits situations where headroom or floor build-up is restricted. It is heavier than a UB of equivalent bending capacity, so it is a headroom decision rather than an economy one.
